Preventing Back Problems Returning So You Stay Strong 4 Life

Treating sore backs is a big part of what we do here at Tyack Health. Some years ago we participated in a study by one of the big health funds that highlighted that our team achieved quicker return to normal function rates than the industry standards by almost 50% when it comes to back pain. While this is very encouraging we are still dedicated to the ideal of empowering our patients with ways to ensure back pain does not return.

Statistics indicate that 70-90% of back problems reoccur within one year of first onset. To prevent this reoccurrence we have aligned our approach with the latest research that shows that getting patients out of pain does not mean the problem is fixed. Unfortunately some patients think no pain, no problem and end treatment at that point only to have a relapse down the track.

There are four key stages to overcoming the limitations of reoccurring back problems.

1. Get treatment to get out of acute pain.
2. Taper treatment until stable for one month
3. Correct any underlying imbalances or weaknesses with appropriate rehab and exercises
4. Learn how to modify behaviors (sitting, lifting, bending) to prevent a re-injury

No stage is less important because back pain can become a very debilitating problem and prevention is the only answer.

To ensure a problem does not return treatment should taper from very regular treatment in the acute stage to weekly and then to monthly. If stable for a month then the chance of a relapse is greatly decreased. Often there are underlying weaknesses that until addressed stabilization will not happen. With rehab strengthening and conditioning this can be overcome and the risk of the problem re-occurring significantly reduced. Your practitioner can monitor when this stabilization has been achieved and by maintaining it via various approaches the best long term outcomes are achieved.

Despite the effort our team puts into their treatments a significant factor that determines the likelihood of the injury returning is how the back is used post treatment. Our practitioners do their best to educate patients about what caused the problem, how to protect the back from further damage and what to avoid.

However the problem is this crucial stage in preventing further injury is sometimes poorly covered during the treatment process, because the focus needs to be on treating. A sound knowledge about back injury prevention is a key part of the completed treatment process.

To overcome this we have a new product that is now available to all Tyack Health patients.

It is called Strong 4 Life and is an e-Learning 30 minute tutorial (that you watch online in the comfort of your own home) and delivers you the latest research in how to protect your back from injury and ongoing pain.
